What is shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a type of therapeutic massage
rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, but originating in Japan. In essence, this technique involves applying pressure to specific points on the body to restore natural energy balance and relieve pain and tension.
Shiatsu practitioners apply pressure (also called acupressure) and unblock energy channels with the goal of regulating and restoring the flow of vital energy (called Qi).
Depending on the area of the body being treated, pressure may be applied with the fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows or knees.
Discover the benefits of Shiatsu for your physical and mental well-being
Although very few clinical studies have been published on the subject, Shiatsu is also used to relieve many ailments.
It recognized for its therapeutic benefits and may help:
- People suffering from chronic pain
- People suffering from stress and anxiety
- The elderly.
This massage technique is suitable for people of all ages who want to maintain or improve their physical, psychological and emotional well-being. However, if you suffer from an illness, we advise consulting a health professional to confirm that shiatsu is suitable for you.
1. Relieving pain and muscle tension
The targeted pressure applied during a Shiatsu session can relieve muscle pain and stiffness. By focusing on pressure points and tense areas of the body, shiatsu can help relax muscles and improve flexibility.
This is especially true for rheumatic pain caused by osteoarthritis, arthritis or lumbago. Shiatsu is also effective in treating a stiff or painful neck.
2. Reducing stress and anxiety
Shiatsu also promotes relaxation and helps to calm the mind, a useful aid in managing stress and anxiety. As a true anti-stress massage
, it is also effective in helping those suffering from a nervous (or mental) breakdown, anxiety, drug addiction or sexual disorders.
3. Strengthening the immune system: blood and lymphatic circulation
Shiatsu techniques can also be helpful in improving blood and lymph circulation, known to promote healing and improve overall health. By increasing blood circulation, Shiatsu helps to remove toxins from the body and distribute essential nutrients to tissues. Improved circulation can also help increase the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting infection and disease.
It can also help treat morning sickness during pregnancy, postpartum issues, menstrual cycle disorders, asthma, colds, sinusitis, colitis, constipation and vomiting.
How is a Shiatsu massage performed?
A classic Shiatsu session begins with an initial consultation to:
- Better understand the needs and expectations of the patient
- Ask questions about general health
- Discuss the patient’s medical history and current symptoms
- Perform physical tests to assess posture, muscle tension and joint flexibility.
Once the consultation is complete, the patient undresses and lies down on a tatami or futon. Please note that the person being massaged does not have to undress completely as they would for a body-to-body massage
– just wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows the massage therapist to move around easily.
The practitioner then uses fingers, palms, elbows and knees to apply pressure to areas of tension and pain. After a few seconds, the pressure is then released to allow the energy to flow freely through the body’s meridians.
A shiatsu session usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes and does not require any special equipment or massage oil.
